Battleground

Gianni Amelio

Two medical officers, childhood friends, work in the same military hospital where every day the most seriously wounded arrive from the front. Many of them have self-inflicted wounds, they are fakers who would do anything to avoid returning to combat. Stefano, from an upper-middle-class family, whose father dreams of a future in politics for him, is obsessed with these self-harmers and, as well as being a doctor, he functions, in his own way, as a cop. Giulio, apparently more understanding and tolerant, is uneasy at the sight of blood and more suited for research, he would have liked to become a biologist. Anna, friends with both since her university days, pays the price for being a woman. At that time, without an influential family behind her, it was difficult for her to succeed in earning a degree in medicine. But she tackles the hard work with grit and volunteers with the Red Cross. Meanwhile, something strange is happening among the patients: many mysteriously grow worse. Perhaps someone is causing complications to their wounds on purpose so the soldiers can be sent home, crippled, even mutilated, provided they don’t go back into battle. So there is a saboteur in the hospital; Anna is the first to suspect as much. But at the battlefront, just before the end of the conflict, a kind of infection is spreading that strikes more heavily than enemy weapons. And soon it contaminates the civilian population…
